NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's tennis team has now won two of the last three matches, defeating Millsaps College 5-2 on Monday.
Loyola now owns a 4-6 record on the season heading into the team's third-straight home match on Wednesday. The Wolf Pack will play Jones College at home in City Park in a match scheduled for noon.
Aubin Duchier and Spencer Matz had a strong start to the match, winning 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Then Francisco Javier Arce Vieyra and Samuel Motazed sealed the doubles point, 6-2 at the No. 1 position, with the Pack getting one more doubles win from Herman Aure and Remus Hebhang-Balan, 6-4 on Court 3.
The first singles result of the match came from Kent Shiell, who played in his first match with the Pack since returning from injury and dominated 6-1, 6-0. Theo Debackere was next, improving to 2-0 at No. 1 singles this year with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Then Diego Rodriguez Tobar, also making his season debut after returning from injury, clinched the match for the Wolf Pack with a 7-5, 6-4 win on Court 4.
Loyola closed out the day with one more win, after Hebhang-Balan came back after dropping the first set to take his match 6-7, 6-2, 10-8.
"We were able to get some guys in the match who were coming off injury with Kent and Diego. The guys compete very well in general and always start out with energy. They came out with good energy for doubles, and that's been something we've been doing every match.
We have a really important match against Mobile that we're gearing up for, and we're trying to accomplish all of our goals that we have in our conference. We're 1-1 in the SSAC right now, and we know we can play with anyone. We just have to bring that belief and hunger every time we play and keep bringing that energy.
I'm really excited for that conference match and our upcoming conference Round-up. The guys have been competing incredibly well. We have to keep focusing on playing the type of tennis we know we can play, and I think we'll be able to prove that over these four conference matches coming up.
