St. Sebastian Award
St. Sebastian was a Christian martyr and patron saint of athletes whose bravery and faith became legendary in the early church. Because the legends surrounding his life include stories about him surviving an assault of arrows, he became highly venerated in the 14th century, when people suffering from the plague sought courage in facing the terrible assault of disease. Loyola University New Orleans has given the Department of Athletics and Wellness the honor of awarding the annual St. Sebastian Award to an individual who has exhibited outstanding efforts on behalf of Loyola athletes on and off the field of play. The recipient is also measured by charitable, community, civic, and spiritual service to humanity.Â
