MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Loyola Wolf Pack men's tennis team closed out the SSAC Roundup on Saturday against NAIA No. 25 Tennessee Southern.
The Wolf Pack (5-3, 2-1 SSAC) won two doubles matches over ranked Firehawks doubles teams to secure the first point in the match, followed by four singles wins. Doubles competition featured three different ITA ranked doubles teams, two on the side of UTS and one for the Pack.
Loyola's top doubles team, No. 21-ranked Sam Izrael and Alfredo Gallegos, dominated 6-1 against the No. 31 Firehawks duo of Quentin Ferron and Brock Hamilton to start the match. Then, Jett Nguyen and Hippolyte de Preville teamed up for a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot. Finally, Luca Abati and Samuel Marin took down a top-50 doubles team, No. 48 Ayden Kousis and Luis Guilherme Cupertino de Santana, 6-4, to clinch a doubles sweep.
Gallegos got things started in singles, cruising 6-1, 6-1 on court 3. Izrael also won a quick two-setter, 6-4, 6-1. UTS responded with wins on courts 1 and 6 to cut the scoreboard deficit to 3-2, with courts 4 and 5 going to deciding third sets. Marin and Abati both pulled out third-set victories to help Loyola secure the team win.
The Wolf Pack men's team will return to the court on Thursday, March 26, for a home match against the University of Mobile. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the City Park Tennis Center.
