Loyola tennis teams defeat Jones College in fall finale

Both men's and women's Wolf Pack squads will head into the spring with 1-0 overall records after earning 7-0 victories Friday

NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams earned their first results of the 2021-22 season Friday, with both teams defeating Jones College 7-0 at City Park. 

"Big thanks to Jones College for coming to City Park today," head coach Matthew Llewellyn said. "It was a great match for us to wrap up our fall season."

After competing at the Gulf ITA Regional and the ITA Cup, this was the first and last dual match of the fall season. Both Wolf Pack squads will enter the spring season with 1-0 records. Friday's match was also the last match of Samuel Marin's Loyola career, as he will graduate from the university in December. 

Marin picked up the first singles point in the men's match, winning in straight sets on Court 4. The senior also teamed up with Aubin Duchier for a 7-6 doubles win. Francisco Arce Vieyra and Tiger Cheung also won in doubles as the Pack claimed the doubles point. 

Herman Aure, Samuel Motazed, and Diego Rodriguez Tobar joined Marin in securing straight-sets singles victories, while Arce Vieyra and Duchier won their matches in three sets. 

"To be able to send a player and person like Sam Marin out on such a high note was special," said Llewellyn. "He has meant so much to our team and program. We will miss him this spring, but are excited for him to take his next step in life. I am confident he has built a foundation here that will carry him to great success."

In the women's match, Loyola swept the Bobcats on every court. Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez, fresh off of a trip to the ITA Cup in doubles, cruised to a 6-1 doubles win on Court 1; they each also earned straight-sets victories in singles. 

Every women's singles match was a straight-sets win for Loyola, as Elly Carpenter, Madelynn Chavez, Isabella Leaño, and Mathilde Camus were also victorious in singles. Carpenter and Leaño also teamed up in doubles for a 6-1 win on Court 2, while the other doubles win came from the team of Chavez and Danilyn Alexander, winning 6-4 on Court 3.
