The Loyola Wolf Pack women's track and field team had 10 win all-conference honors as well as 13 on the league's all-academic team
MONTGOMERY, Ala.– The Loyola University New Orleans women's track and field team is finishing up another successful outdoor season, and the Southern States Athletic Conference honored its All-Conference award-winners and the All-Academic team members on Tuesday.
The all-conference winners are based on their finish at the SSAC Championships last month, and the Wolf Pack had 10 total student-athletes in 10 events place in the Top 3 at the championship, and Loyola led the conference with 13 on the SSAC All-Academic Team. Heavey was also Loyola's representative on the Champions of Character Team.
Junior Madisyn Acosta placed second in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs to grab two All-Conference Second Team honors, and Bryana Bazile did the same in the shot put and discus events. Kaitlyn Becnel nabbed second in the high jump, and Alyssia Ewing made it six total second-team honors with her performance in the hammer throw. On the SSAC All-Conference Third Team, Alyssa Salazar, Jada Farrell and Shaylah Robinson placed third in the triple jump, shot put and discus, respectively, as well as Isabel Esteb, Amber Byrd, Mallory Foret and Salazar teaming up to claim third place in the 4,400-meter relay.
Becnel's performance in the high jump got the championship started for the Wolf Pack, as the sophomore earned a B qualifying mark for the NAIA National Championship. She recorded a jump of 1.64 meters, which was a personal best and the second-best jump in school history. It's currently ranked as the 19th-best jump in the NAIA this season, too. Ewing also set a new personal record with her hammer throw performance, placing second with a toss of 40.07 meters. It was the second-best throw in school history as well.
Acosta and Bazile both were second in two different events, as Acosta ran in two track events while Bazile competed in the two throwing events. Acosta broke school records in both events, too, running a time of 2:18.18 in the 800 and a 4:45.66 in the 1,500. Bazile, while she's already qualified for the national championships in the discus event, placed second on Day 1 of the championships with the fourth-best throw in school history of 42.20 meters. During the second day of the competition, her 12.74-meter throw in the shot put was good enough for second and also good enough to be the second-best throw in school history. She's already broken the school record in both events.
Farrell and Robinson both placed third behind Bazile in the two throwing events, as Farrell, who's also on the women's basketball team, logged a throw of 12.63 meters in the shot put to claim the fifth-best throw in school history. Robinson's 37.15 meters in the discus event was good enough for third on Friday of the championships.
Salazar broke her second school record with her performance in the triple jump event. She also has the 400-meter hurdles record, and after taking third place with a jump of 11.17 meters, she's earned her first career SSAC Women's Outdoor All-Conference honor. She was also part of the 4x400-meter relay team, along with Esteb, Byrd and Foret, which placed third for SSAC All-Conference Third Team honors.
