The Pack grab wins against host-school Dallas Christian but drop two games to Park University
DALLAS – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team concluded a busy weekend at the Dallas Christian College tournament, picking up a pair of wins over Dallas Christian but falling in both games to Park University.
On Friday, the Wolf Pack (5-4) began the day with a 9:30 a.m. game against Park University. Down 1-0 after the first inning, Loyola climbed their way back in it with runs in the first and third inning. After drawing the game even at 3-all with a run in the top of the sixth, Park brought in three in the bottom of the inning, stealing the game from Loyola.
In game two Friday, Loyola took on the host school, Dallas Christian, with Gary Cavallo Jr. taking the mound to start. The junior picked up his first win of the season, pitching six innings and only allowing one run. With the offense plating four runs fueled by a two-run homer from Allen Dennis, Lawrence Frishberg came in for the save, sealing the 4-2 win for the Pack.
In the opening Saturday game for Loyola against Park, the Pack dropped a tough 9-4 game, as multi-hit games from Dennis, Payton Alexander and Michael Toscano weren't enough. Loyola got things back on track in game two of the day however, defeating Dallas Christian once again.
In the 11-4 victory, Brenden Taravella went five strong innings to claim the victory, striking out a career-best nine batters. Yet another multi-hit and home run game from Dennis, and three-hit performance from Alexander got the Loyola bats rolling, as Loyola picked up their second victory of the tournament.
The Wolf Pack will return home next week, hosting Bryant and Stratton College Monday and Tuesday at Segnette Field.
Wolf Pack Head Coach Doug Faust
"We swung the bats well the whole weekend. Our pitching wasn't bad, Park is just a good team. They have solid pitchers, and they play well on defense, they're just a solid baseball team. We had a chance to win the first one against Park for sure, but they blew it open on us in the last inning. Overall, I'm disappointed in our defense throughout the weekend, we gave Park several opportunities to extend the inning and they took advantage of it. Players were pitching and players were hitting, just disappointed in the defense, we need to get better."
