Coming off a 7-5 victory in game one yesterday, the Loyola University New Orleans Baseball team welcomed Dallas Christian College back to Segnette Field for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolf Pack dropped game one 8-5, before earning the 12-8 victory in game two.
Following the split, Loyola is now 7-6 on the year.
Game One – Loyola 5, Dallas Christian 8
Jr. IF Luis Anguizola (David, Chiriqui, Panama/Colegio San Agustin)had a huge game for the Wolf Pack in game one, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run. So. IF Ben Condara (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas),R.-Jr. IF Blake Toscano (Metairie, La./Holy Cross), Jr. OF Alexander Lorenzo (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) and Fr. IF Cody Rutscher(Overland Park, Kansas/ Miami University (OH)) each recorded a RBI in the loss, with Toscano adding three assists and four putouts.
On the mound, Sr. RHP Daniel Posway (Sugarland, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) drops to 1-1 on the year after giving up five runs (four earned) on 13 hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
Down 2-0, Anguizola got the Wolf Pack on the board in the bottom of the first inning after bringing in So. IF Rawlings Elam (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas High) with a single to center field.
The Crusaders put up three more runs the next two innings to stretch their advantage to 5-1.
In the bottom in the fourth, Sr. C Lance Liccardi (River Ridge, La./Holy Cross) and So. IF Spencer Rosenbohm (Daphne, Ala./Bayside Academy) both walked then advanced thanks to a wild pitch to put runners on second and third. Toscano followed with a sacrifice fly to score Liccardi from third to bring the score to 5-2.
Anguizola led off the bottom of the fifth with a double off the left field wall. With one out, Lorenzo connected on a single up the right side to score Anguizola and bring Loyola within two at 5-3.
The visitors tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead to 8-3 heading in to the final half inning.
Loyola loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and used two back-to-back walks to cut into the deficit with two outs. The Wolf Pack were unable to trim the lead any more and they fell in game one 8-5.
Game Two – Loyola 12, Dallas Christian College 8
Toscano led the Wolf Pack with two hits and three runs, while adding two RBI. Sr. C Daniel Pappas (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) and Wilson both notched three RBI and Elam chipped in one RBI to go along with two runs.
On the mound, Jr. RHP Stewart Campbell (New Orleans, La./St. Martin's) earned his first win of the season after giving up three runs on two hits in three innings pitched.
After Dallas Christian put up one run to start the game, Toscano led off the bottom half of the first inning with a walk. He proceeded to steal two bases before being brought home by a sacrifice fly from Jr. OF Jordan Wilson (San Francisco, Calif./George Washington High) to tie the game at 1-1.
The Crusaders added two more runs in the top of the third inning to retake the lead at 3-1.
Back-to-back walks gave Loyola two men on with two outs in the bottom of the third. Wilson came to the plate and smacked a double to left, scoring both baserunners to knot the score at 3-3.
With the score tied at 3-3, Loyola exploded for eight runs (all with two outs) in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the commanding 11-3 lead.
The visitors tacked on a single run in the top of fifth to bring the score to 11-4.
Following a leadoff double by Anguizola, pinch hitter Sr. OF Abram White(Silver Springs, Md./St. John's College High) stepped to the plate and cranked a single to center field to score Anguizola and bring the score to 12-4 heading in to the final inning of action.
Dallas Christian manufactured four runs in the top of the seventh but Loyola was able to hang on for the 12-8 victory.
The Wolf Pack will travel to take on Spring Hill College on Tuesday, Feb. 23, with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
