Beach volleyball wins two in Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Loyola Wolf Pack beach volleyball team wrapped up the Sun Conference schedule on Saturday with matches against the Mobile Rams and William Carey Crusaders . The Wolf Pack won both matches, starting the day with a 3-2 win against the Rams before another 3-2 victory over the Crusaders. 

 

Loyola (11-3, 8-2 SUN) has now won six consecutive conference matches to lock up the third-best record in the conference behind New College of Florida and Ave Maria. 

 

The match started with two straight wins for the Pack, Mary Dinegar and Belén Puche Laguna had one of the few straight-sets wins of the match, 21-16, 21-12 on court 5. Amaya Bazemore and Isabella Rodrigue won the first set, lost a close second, then prevailed in the third to win 21-16, 20-22, 15-12 on court 4. 

 

Mobile got its first point in the team score with a three-set win on court 3, but Loyola was able to clinch the match on court 1, as Madeline Corrall and Kala Emanuelli took down Mobile's top duo 21-17, 21-19. The other Rams point came after the match was clinched, as Samantha Guillotte and Kiarelis Martinez fell by just a two-point margin in a third set. 

 

In the William Carey match, the Crusaders began with back-to-back three-set wins on the top two courts, meaning Loyola would need to win the next three to take the match. They did exactly that, with the pairs of Isis Harink and Juliet Petruzelli, Bazemore and Rodrigue, and Dinegar and Puche all winning in straight sets. 

 

Bazemore and Rodrigue took the lead in total wins for a Wolf Pack pair this season, improving to 11-0 overall and 10-0 in Sun Conference matches. After them, Guillotte and Martinez also have double-digit wins with a 10-3 overall record. Corral and Emanuelli are 7-5 at the No. 1 position. Harink and Petruzelli have gone 6-2 this season, while Dinegar and Puche have won all four of their matches since getting their first action at home last weekend. 

 

Loyola will close out the regular season at home next Thursday, April 2, with two matches against Nicholls. The doubleheader, which starts at 1 p.m., will be played at White Sands Volleyball Courts in Elmwood, Louisiana.
