GREENVILLE, Ala. – The Southern States Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship wrapped up on Thursday with the third and final round. The Loyola Wolf Pack men's golf team placed seventh in the 54-hole tournament with a score of 909 (+45).
No. 3 Dalton State ran away with the title after carding a three-round team total of 854 (-10). In a distant second was No. 17 William Carey (+15), followed by No. 25 Point (+26) moving up to third place on the final day. No. 18 Faulkner (+27), UT Southern (+31) and No. 25 Blue Mountain Christian (+38) finished ahead of the Pack.
Cameron Bruce had the best individual finish for the Wolf Pack, ending the championship in 12th place (+5). Bruce was five-over after eight holes on Thursday, but he finished his final 10 holes 1-under to bring him to his third-round 76 (+4) score. Peter Weirich was next for Loyola in 19th place (+9). His final round started steadily with a birdie on the first hole and seven straight pars, but a rocky turn to the back nine quickly moved the freshman to five-over through 11 holes. He finished well, though, carding two more birdies and three more pars down the stretch to score a 76 (+4).
Cristobal Salome had the low round of the day for Loyola, shooting a third-round 73 (+1) to move up 12 spots on the leaderboard to 26th place (+13). After four pars and two bogeys through six holes, he carded three birdies in four holes to sit 1-under through 10. The freshman had four pars, three bogeys and a birdie on his card during his final eight holes.
Cole Haase and Trey Ponce played as substitutes throughout the tournament, and the two closed the week with final rounds of 77 (+5) and 79 (+7) to contribute to Loyola's scoring.
