Men’s golf begins SSAC Championship Tuesday

GREENVILLE, Ala. – The Southern States Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship began on Tuesday, and the Loyola Wolf Pack sits in fourth place out of 10 competing teams with a 296 (+8) team score. Loyola is one shot behind third-place No. 17 William Carey (+7) and eight strokes behind the leaders, No. 3 Dalton State (E) and No. 18 Faulkner (E).
 

The Wolf Pack currently holds the advantage over two other NAIA Top 25 teams, leading No. 24 Point by five strokes and No. 25 Blue Mountain Christian by six. 
 

Cameron Bruce leads the Pack in second place on the individual leaderboard. He put together a career-best round of 67 (-5) to sit one stroke behind the leader from Faulkner. After four pars started his day, the senior carded four straight birdies and one more par to finish his first nine at 4-under. He sandwiched a couple of birdies around a bogey to begin his second nine holes, and he added one more birdie and another bogey to finish his day. His round score of 67 ties for the third-best score in program history, and his 5-under to-par score is tied for the second-best in the record books. 
 

Peter Weirich had a solid first round as well, finishing the day in 17th place. The freshman shot a 74 (+2) on Tuesday to begin his first championship, rebounding after a rocky start. Weirich was 4-over through his first four holes, but 10 pars, three birdies and one bogey made up the rest of his round to get to his 2-over score. Cristobal Salome is two shots behind Weirich in 21st place after a round of 76 (+4). Salome had a slow start, too, sitting at 3-over after three holes before carding 12 pars, a couple of bogeys and a birdie during his final 15 holes. 
 

Arthur Mijic shot a first-round 79 (+7) to sit in 35th place after Day 1, and Trey Ponce ended Tuesday in 44th, carding an 81 (+9).
