Beach volleyball starts Sun Conference play 2-0

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Loyola Wolf Pack beach volleyball team began the Sun Conference part of the schedule on Friday, with matches against two Florida schools, Florida Memorial and St. Thomas. The Wolf Pack won both, 3-2 against St. Thomas and a 5-0 sweep of Florida Memorial. 

With a 2-0 start to conference play, Loyola now owns a 4-1 overall record, which is the best record the program has had through the first five matches of a season. 

To start Friday's doubleheader, the Pack earned their first shutout win of the season, with every Wolf Pack pair winning in straight sets. None of the Florida Memorial pairs scored more than 13 points in any set, and Loyola held the Lions to fewer than 10 points in half the sets played. 

Juliet Petruzelli and Mary Dinegar allowed the fewest points in the Florida Memorial, winning both sets 21-7 on court 3. Samanatha Guillotte and Rosemary Vanney also had a dominant win against the Lions, 21-9, 21-8 on court 2. 

The No. 4 and 5 pairs for the Pack, Amaya Bazemore/Isabella Rodrigue and Kiarelis Martinez/Belén Puche Laguna both went 2-0 on the day, as did the top flight of Madelina Corrall and Kala Emanuelli, who clinched the team victory against St. Thomas. 

Loyola will face the 2024 Sun Conference regular season champions, NAIA No. 8 Ave Maria, on Saturday, with the match scheduled for 9 a.m. The teams met twice last season, with the Gyrenes barely getting past the Pack 3-2 in both.
