Men’s golf begins BMCU Spring Classic at Old Waverly

WEST POINT, Miss. – The Loyola University New Orleans men's golf team began its final multi-day tournament of the season on Monday, as a tight team leaderboard has the Wolf Pack in 14th place out of 17 teams with a 37-over score. No. 4 Dalton State (-5), Tennessee Southern (+14) and (RV) Cumberland (+15) make up the Top 3, while Loyola is nine strokes outside the Top 10 in the competitive field. 
 

Peter Weirich leads the Wolf Pack in a tie for 15th place with a two-round total of 148 (+4). Trey Ponce is next in 35th (+7), and Cristobal Salome (+12), Cameron Bruce (+14) and Arthur Mijic (+18) are next in 58th, 62nd and 76th. 
 

Weirich carded a first-round 77 (+5) before putting together his second under-par round of the season in the afternoon. The freshman quickly dropped down to 2-under with an eagle at the par-5 10th to start his second round, and he added a birdie on the par-4 fourth to help is scoring. He finished with 14 pars and two bogeys to get to his 71 (-1) score. 
 

Ponce started his day on the ninth tee and proceeded to birdie that hole to begin the day 1-under. He played the back nine of the course at 3-over, but he carded third birdies, four pars and a bogey during his final eight holes to shoot up the individual leaderboard with a 72 (E) first-round score. His afternoon featured a more up-and-down round, carding a 79 (+7).
 

Salome had rounds of 79 (+7) and 77 (+5) and Bruce shot 80 (+8) and 78 (+6) scores to sit in the middle of the pack. Salome also had Loyola's second eagle of the day, scoring a 3 on the par-5 second.
