MATHEWS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans men's golf team continued its fall schedule on Monday, playing the first two rounds of the Nicholls State-hosted LaTour intercollegiate. The field is filled with NCAA Division I programs, including a top-ranked junior college from Texas, as seven teams finished the first 36 holes under par. Loyola carded a two-round total of 606 (+30) to sit in 14h place.
Cristobal Salome and Peter Weirich lead the Wolf Pack in 29th and 45th place, respectively, on the individual leaderboards. Salome is sitting at 1-over after the first day of the tournament, and Weirich is 4-over, as 23 golfers are under par with 18 holes to play on Tuesday.
Salome had the low-round of the day, shooting a first-round 70 (-2) during his morning round. His card featured five birdies and 10 pars, including three straight birdies during his second nine holes. He traded birdies and bogeys through his first seven holes of the second round, then an eagle on his ninth hole capped off his first nine. He played more consistently during his second nine, but one trouble hole resulted him finishing with a 75 (+3).
Weirich's first-round 73 (+1) set him up nicely for a solid day. He started the day with a birdie before moving down to two-under with another birdie on his fifth hole. He hit an up-and-down stretch on his seventh through 14 holes, but capped off his morning with four straight pars. The sophomore, again, birdied the first hole of his second round, and he was 2-under after his first nine holes. A five-over finish, though, gave him a 75 (+3) for his second round.
Leon Mishkin and Arsenios Kalogerakis had better second-round scores than their morning rounds. Mishkin is in 71st place (+12) after rounds of 80 and 76, and Kalogerakis is in 77th (+22) with rounds of 84 and 82. Miles Russell carded a 78 in the morning and a 79 in the afternoon to finish the day in 72nd (+13).
The third and final round will take place on Tuesday.
