GULFPORT, Miss. – The Loyola Wolf Pack men's golf team competed on Tuesday for the first time this season, battling Spring Hill College and the University of Mobile in a one-day stroke-play event in Gulfport, Mississippi. No team scores were recorded, but Preston Giroir tied for first out of 33 golfers with a 2-over, 74 score at Windance Country Club.
Giroir started his round with eighth pars and a birdie on the first nine, but ran into some trouble during his first three holes of the back nine. Two birdies, three pars and a bogey helped close out the sophomore's round well, though. Cole Haase joined him in the Top 5, carding a 76 (+2) to place in a tie for fifth in his first collegiate event. Haase was five-over after the first nine holes but a 1-under back nine helped the freshman right the ship.
Darrell Santiago and Cameron Bruce both tied for 10th with 79 (+7) scores to give Loyola four golfers in the 70s. Arthur Mijic (80) was next on the leaderboard in a tie for 13th, and Peter Weirich and Michael Bullock both tied for 18th (82). Cristobal Salome (21st, 83), Cade Scarborough (23rd, 84), Jacob Brand (24th, 85) and Marco Olano (24th, 85) rounded out Loyola's scores.
The Pack is set for their first team tournament next week, taking part in Delta State's Dunning Invitational Sept. 23-24 at Mossy Oak Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi.
