GREENVILLE, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans men's golf team started the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship on Monday by playing the first of three rounds at RTJ Cambrian Ridge. The Wolf Pack currently sits in a tie for fifth place after carding a 308 (+20) during first-round action, and they're just seven strokes from fourth-place Blue Moutain Christian (+13) and 10 strokes from third-place UT Southern (+10).
No. 1 Dalton State started the Championship by going 3-under (285) to sit atop the team leaderboard, and No. 19 William Carey is in second after a first-round 297 (+9).
Playing as an individual,
Cameron Bruce leads the Wolf Pack in a tie for ninth place, as the junior shot a 1-over, 73 for his first round. He started with a birdie on his opening hole, then found himself in trouble with five bogeys during his next six to sit four-over. The Social Circle, Georgia, native rebounded nicely, though, carding three birdies and eight pars on his final 11 holes to end his day. He's currently two shots from a Top 5 position and six shots from the leader.
Arthur Mijic led the team scoring with his first-round 75 (+3) to sit in a tie for 12th place. He stayed even-par through six holes before moving to five-over through 15, but a solid finish with two birdies and a par brought the junior back down to 3-over.
Preston Giroir is next in a tie for 20th, two shots behind his teammate with a 77 (+5). The freshman was 2-under through seven holes, but a tough eighth hole and an up-and-down finish eventually brought him to his 5-over score.
Michael Bullock and
Max Kukuk are both in a tie for 26th after first-round 78s (+6), and
Trey Ponce is in a tie for 34th, one stroke behind those two, after a 79 (+7) on Monday.
The second round is set for Tuesday with Bruce teeing off first at 8:48 a.m.
