MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's tennis team began the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Roundup on Friday with a 7-0 sweep of Blue Mountain Christian University. The Loyola men also won their match against Blue Mountain on Friday, giving Matt Llewellyn his 50th win as head coach of the Loyola men's and women's tennis programs.
It was the fourth consecutive win for the Wolf Pack (4-3, 3-0 SSAC), which has only lost one singles match over the winning streak. A huge matchup in the conference and NAIA standings awaits the Pack on Saturday, as No. 12 Loyola will match up with No. 4 Middle Georgia State at 10 a.m.
Blue Mountain was playing with only five active players, giving Loyola a win by default in court 3 doubles and court 6 singles.
Needing just one doubles win to clinch the match's first point, Micaela Ponce and Ariana Salgueiro-Estela only dropped one game en route to a 6-1 victory. Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez also prevailed 6-3 at the No. 1 spot to close out doubles competition.
Adele Fereres continued her great start to the season, once again winning in straight sets at 6-0, 6-0, to pick up the first singles point for the fourth consecutive match. Ponce then clinched the match victory on court 2, also not losing a single game in her singles match 6-0, 6-0.
The other singles matches played out, with Vasquez being next up with a 6-1, 6-0 win on court 4. Chloe Henderson also had a dominant win at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Carpenter finished out the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win on court 1 to complete the sweep.
Five different players on the Wolf Pack women's team have started the conference schedule undefeated at 3-0: Carpenter, Henderson, Fereres, Frierson, and Ponce. The best singles records on the team belong to Carpenter and Fereres at 6-1, though Ponce and Frierson are not far behind at 5-1 singles records, with Frierson an undefeated 5-0 against NAIA competition.
