Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

No. 11 seed Loyola upsets No. 6 Southeastern to reach NAIA quarterfinal

The Wolf Pack trailed 3-2 before Avrora Volkova and Avery Frierson won back-to-back singles matches to advance the Pack into the quarterfinal for the third straight year

MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's tennis team is advancing to the quarterfinal round at the NAIA National Championship for the third consecutive season after an upset win Wednesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.

No. 11 seed Loyola took down the No. 6 seed Southeastern Fire 4-3 to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. Loyola also improved to a 10-7 overall record with the win, marking the fourth straight season with double-digit wins.

The Wolf Pack will face a familiar foe in the team's third match of the tournament: No. 3 seed Tennessee Wesleyan, which was Loyola's opponent to begin the ITA NAIA National Women's Team Indoor Championship in February. The quarterfinal match is set for 1 p.m. Thursday at the Mobile Tennis Center.

Southeastern came into the match with a resume featuring wins over several top-10 teams, including top-ranked Keiser and William Carey. Regardless, the Pack came out with energy in doubles to come away with wins on the top two courts. Avery Frierson and Adele Fereres collected their 10th victory as a pair this season with a 6-3 result on court 2. Micaela Ponce and Presha Shanthamoorthi then captured the doubles point with a 6-4 win on the No. 1 court.

Fereres continued her dominant singles season with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court 3, improving to a team-best 12-2 overall record in singles in 2026.

After Fereres put the Pack up 2-0, three other courts finished in the Southeastern's favor, as the Fire picked up straight-sets wins on courts 1, 4, and 5.

Momentum then started to turn in the Wolf Pack's favor. Avrora Volkova came back from down 5-4 in the first set to win a 7-4 tiebreak just as Avery Frierson entered a third set after bouncing back from a 6-0 first-set loss to win the second set 6-3.

Volkova took over in her second set, finishing it with a 6-2 win, so the match would be decided on court 2, and Frierson trailed 5-4 down a break. The graduate student rallied to win three straight games and clinch the match.
