Beach volleyball earns first win of 2024

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – Battling through injury on Saturday, the Loyola Beach Volleyball team triumphed over Huntingdon College in their first win of the 2024 season. The Wolf Pack went 1-2 on the day and 1-3 overall at the Huntingdon Beach Bash, the team's first tournament of the season, which pitted the Pack against a handful of NCAA Division-III opponents. 

Following two challenging losses the previous day, Loyola opened the second day of competition with a match against East Texas Baptist. The No. 4 pair of Rosemary Vanney and Preslie Boswell emerged as the sole victors for the Wolf Pack, securing a 21-11, 21-10 win, but ETBU took the match 4-1.

For the second match against host Huntingdon College, the lineup underwent adjustments after Juliet Petruzelli was unavailable due to an injury in the previous match. Emily Sheperis from the No. 6 position replaced her to play with Juliana Pacini at the No. 2 position. Additionally, Kiarelis Martinez debuted in the lineup, teaming up with Melanie Tassin at the No. 5 position. Together, Martinez and Tassin clinched their inaugural win as a pair and secured the first duel point 21-16, 21-14. Madeline Corrall and Samantha Ingram at the No. 3 position closed their match 21-14, 21-19 for the second point. Vanney and Boswell continued their undefeated streak for the day, capturing the match-clinching victory in a three set battle, 16-21, 21-6, 15-6, as the Pack earned a 3-2 result. 

With this win, Loyola (1-3) looks forward to their first home games of 2024 at Coconut Beach this weekend, facing William Carey at 10:00 a.m. and Mobile at 2:00 p.m. It's also the first Sun Conference matchups of the season.
