MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans women's tennis team closed out the SSAC Roundup with a strong performance on Saturday, winning 4-0 against Florida National.
Loyola is now 11-5 on the season and 4-2 in conference play. That matches the most conference wins in a season in program history. It's also the second-most wins for the team in any season.
The Wolf Pack started off the match with solid doubles play, with Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez getting their second 6-0 win of the week. Ariana Salgueiro-Estela and Micaela Ponce wrapped up doubles with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
Carpenter was dominant again in singles, only dropping one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Playing every match at the No. 1 position, Carpenter was a combined 5-0 at the Roundup between singles and doubles.
The other two singles wins for the Pack were similarly dominant, with Adele Fereres winning 6-1, 6-3 on court 5 and Isabella Leaño getting a perfect 6-0, 6-0 result.
After going 2-1 at the Roundup, the Wolf Pack will return home for a match against St. Thomas (Fla.) on Friday, April 7, at noon.
"I could not be happier with the growth this week for our women's team. From dominating Blue Mountain and Florida National to fighting our way to match point vs. No. 7 Middle Georgia yesterday. Middle Georgia had to use every tactic in the sport to barely beat our women. Our women never backed down and continued to focus through heavy adversity. We showed our true strength which needs to become our identity. We have a group of incredibly strong women on this team. They are learning how to use their strength in the most necessary moments in tennis and life. I'm super proud of them for trusting that process.
"4-2 in the conference for both teams coming out of this week is a great step forward. I'm very proud of our teams and the culture we're building. We're building around mental and physical toughness, believing in yourself, and playing for each other.
"We have many goals still on the table for this season. We have a ton of work yet to do. We're going to keep grinding these next few weeks to prepare for the SSAC Championship tournament."
