MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans women's tennis team began a slate of three conference matches on Thursday at the SSAC Roundup in Mobile, Ala.
In the first of three matches this week, No. 14 Loyola defeated Blue Mountain Christian University 4-2, claiming the 10th win of the season for the Wolf Pack. For the Wolf Pack women, now 10-4 on the year and 3-1 in conference play, it's the first season of 10+ wins since 2019, when the team was 12-10.
Loyola is also now 7-0 in dual matches against Blue Mountain since the program started.
The Lady Toppers stunned the Pack in doubles, winning on courts 2 and 3. It was just the third time this season that Loyola has lost the doubles point. Blue Mountain also got a point in singles on court 4.
The top three singles matches went to the Pack. Lucy Carpenter was matched up with SSAC Newcomer of the Year Tsveti Trifonova, winning a first-set tiebreak 7-6 (7-2) and cruising in the second set 6-1.
Next was Micaela Ponce, Loyola's leader in singles victories this season, who improved to 9-4 on the season with her straight sets victory at No. 2 singles. Her doubles partner Ariana Salgueiro-Estela got the third point for the Pack, winning in three sets: 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Adele Fereres was able to clinch the match for the Wolf Pack, improving to 8-2 on the year with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win on court 5.
Friday's action at the SSAC Roundup features a big match for the Wolf Pack women, as the team takes on No. 7 Middle Georgia. The match is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Mobile.
