Beach volleyball gets first conference win Saturday

KENNER, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans beach volleyball team took on two conference foes at home on Saturday, Florida Memorial University and St. Thomas University. 

 

The Wolf Pack earned their first win in The Sun Conference this season with a 4-1 result against FMU, almost getting a second one as well but just getting edged out by STU 3-2. 

 

Against FMU, Loyola got three straight-sets victories at flights 3-5, with wins coming from the pairs of Brittany Cooper and Samantha Ingram, Kiarelis Martinez and Emily Sheperis, and Gabby Masiello and Elizabeth Prado. The Wolf Pack also got a win at flight 2, as Juliet Petruzelli and Preslie Boswell came back from down a set to win their match in three. 

 

The second match of the day could have gone either way, as three of the flights went to three sets. Cooper and Ingram won in straight sets again at flight 3, improving the duo's record this season to 6-2.  Masiello and Prado won again at flight 5, this time in three sets, in one of three matches between Loyola and St. Thomas to last at least an hour. Boswell and Petruzelli played their second three-set match of the day, winning the second set with chances to take the first and third, but STU prevailed in the end. 

 

The Wolf Pack's overall record this season now stands at 3-5, 1-2 in conference play. 

 

Loyola's beach volleyball team will travel to Thibodaux, La. next weekend for four matches at the Clash on the Cajun Bayou tournament, hosted by Nicholls State University. The tournament gets started with the Wolf Pack taking on NCAA Division-I teams New Orleans and UL Monroe on Friday, March 3, with the matches scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
