HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's golf team started their season this week with a solid performance, placing tied for second place at the Carey Collegiate Fall Classic in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. 
 

Playing at Canebrake Country Club, the 15th-ranked Wolf Pack trailed second-place No. 6 William Carey by just one stroke after the first two rounds on Monday, and the Pack made that up with a third-round team score of 299 to tie the Crusaders after 54 holes. Both teams were nine strokes behind the tournament's winner, No. 8 Cumberland, and No. 17 Lindsey Wilson placed fourth 13 strokes behind Loyola and WCU. 
 

Catherine Singletary earned her first Top 5 finish in her collegiate debut, following up her performance on Monday with a 76 third-round score to finish tied for fourth for the tournament. The freshman started her round with three straight bogeys before carding 10 pars, two birdies and three bogeys during the rest of her round. Emma Smithers made it two Wolf Pack golfers in the Top 10, finishing tied for seventh after carding a 76 as well on Tuesday. She finished her first nine holes 1-over before a 3-over second nine brought Smithers to her final 4-over score. 
 

Lainey Cristan, Blair McKenzie and Kaitlyn Montoya all moved up the leaderboard, too, to help Loyola have all five golfers inside the Top 20 of the 48-woman field. Cristan finished 11th overall with a 75 third-round score, battling through an up-and-down first nine before a 1-under back nine. McKenzie scored a 76 on Tuesday to finish tied for 14th, shooting a 1-over score during her first nine holes before a 3-over second nine brought her to a 4-over score. Montoya had the lowest score of the group, putting together an even-par round (72) to move up seven spots into a tie for 16th. Montoya started her day with a birdie, finishing 2-under through her first nine holes, then she a 1-over second nine ended her day. 
 

Loyola is next in action Oct. 10-11 in Loudon, Tennessee, participating in the Faulkner Match Play tournament at Tennessee National.
