HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's golf team started their season with the first two rounds of the Carey Collegiate Fall Classic on Monday, and the team currently sits in third place out of eight teams with 18 more holes set for Tuesday. Loyola has two golfers inside the Top 10 of the leaderboard as well, and four in the Top 20 to set up Tuesday's third round at Canebrake Country Club in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
As a team, No. 15 Loyola is one stroke away from second-place No. 6 William Carey and 12 strokes from first-place No. 8 Cumberland (Tenn.).
Catherine Singletary made her Loyola debut Monday, as the freshman finds herself tied for third on the leaderboard after rounds of 77 and 70 to finish the day 3-over. After a bogey started her day, she carded back-to-back birdies to settle into her first round. Her back nine was a little more up and down, carding two more birdies but five bogeys or worse during the second nine brought Singletary to her 5-over first-round score. Her afternoon round was more consistent, though, playing even through her first nine holes with two birdies and two bogeys. Another bogey on her 10th hole moved her to 1-over, but five straight pars then a birdie on the 17th and an eagle on the 18th shot her up the leaderboard with one round to play Tuesday.
After a rocky start to her first round, Emma Smithers was able to finish her first nine holes at 2-over before a 3-over back nine made it a 5-over first round for the senior. During her second round, however, Smithers dropped down to 3-under through her first eight holes with three birdies and five pars. She closed her second round with a 2-over back nine to sit in sixth place on the leaderboard at 5-over for the tournament.
Lainey Cristan is sitting just outside the Top 10, two strokes to be exact, with a 10-over score through 36 holes. She started her day with 79 during her morning round then finished the day nicely with a 75. Blair McKenzie is two strokes behind Cristan in a tie for 15th place after scores of 76 and 80, and Kaitlyn Montoya is tied for 23rd, carding an 80 and an 81 Monday.
