The Wolf Pack women's team earned a 6-1 result while the men won 5-2
NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's teams hosted Dillard in City Park on Wednesday, with both teams earning victories.
Â
The Wolf Pack women's team (3-3), after being ranked No. 14 in today's NAIA Top 25 Poll, earned a 6-1 result, while the men's team (2-3), behind a strong doubles performance, won 5-2.Â
Â
The Loyola men swept the doubles matches, starting with Aubin Duchier and Remus Hebhang-Balan, who rallied off six-straight games to win 6-1 at Court 1. Francisco Arce Vieyra and Herman Aure won 6-4 on Court 2, and Theo Debackere and Filip Hovland won 6-5 on Court 3.
Â
In singles, Debackere, Duchier, and Arce wrapped up the win with straight-sets wins. Aure and Hebhang-Balan then lost in tight third-set tiebreaks, but Diego Rodriguez Tobar was able to close out the match on a positive note with a straight-sets victory on Court 6.Â
Â
"The men getting the doubles point was big," said head coach Matthew Llewellyn." That helped our confidence. We lost a couple match tiebreaks at the end which we'll learn from."
Â
In the women's match, the Pack also played well in doubles, starting with a 6-0 win for Reilly Briggs and Madelynn Chavez, who won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Then at the No. 1 position, Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez won 6-2, bringing the duo to 5-1 this season in doubles play.Â
Â
"Fatima and Lucy give us a spark," said Llewellyn." Having them at the top of the lineup gives us belief we can beat anyone. They're becoming true leaders."
Â
Carpenter also played at No. 1 in singles, winning in straight sets. Dillard got one point with a Court 2 win at the end of singles play, but by then the match was already wrapped up, with two more singles victories coming from Chavez and Isabella Leaño, who did not drop a game in her match.
Â
"Solid match for our men and women," Llewellyn said. "Dillard competed very well, and both teams played for each other today. We'll need to build on that as we prepare for Mobile next Friday."
Â
It'll be another home match for the Wolf Pack, who will take on the University of Mobile in the conference opener on February 25 at New Orleans City Park.
