The Wolf Pack men's and women's golf teams played the third round of the Invite at Innisbrook Tuesday, capping off the teams' first competition of the season
PALM HARBOR, Fla. – The Loyola Wolf Pack men's and women's golf teams finished the 54-hole Invite at Innisbrook tournament Tuesday, playing the final 18 holes after a 36-hole day Monday. The 12th-ranked women's team claimed a Top 3 finish in the stacked 15-team field, competing against seven other NAIA Top 25 teams, while the men's team, which was up against 15 ranked teams, placed 20th overall.
The women's team tied for third place with No. 3 Southeastern with a 945 (+69) score, beating ranked teams like No. 15 Campbellsville, No. 17 Lindsey Wilson, No. 24 Cumberland and No. 25 Northwestern. No. 2 Dalton State (+53) and No. 5 SCAD Savannah (+58) took first and second, respectively.
Senior Madison Bates placed third individually to lead the team, carding a 4-over, 77 third-round score to finish the tournament 7-over. She missed out on a tie for second place by just one stroke, and she was four shots shy of the tournament's individual medalist. Junior Emma Smithers also finished inside the Top 10 on the leaderboard with a 14-over three-round score, using her first two rounds Monday to help her earn her first Top 10 finish since last year's Wolf Pack Invitational.
Alejandra Bedoya Tobar and Callee Breland registered Top 30 finishes in the 77-woman field as well. After Tuesday's round of 81, Bedoya Tobar finished the tournament with a 24-over score, which was good for 27th place, and Breland's 76 in the third round helped her move up to a tie for 29th on the leaderboard with a 26-over score. Daniella Salazar put together her best round of the tournament Tuesday, too, finishing 56th overall after an 83 in the third round.
On the men's side, freshman Trey Ponce continued to see success in his first collegiate tournament of his Wolf Pack career, shooting another even-par round with a 71 Tuesday. Ponce started with two birdies through his first four holes, then added his third birdie and an eagle on his 15th hole to help him place tied for 17th on the leaderboard with a 6-over score. The League City, Texas, native was just three strokes from a Top 10 finish.
Chase Venn was next for the Wolf Pack with a 21-over three-round score to place tied for 70th, then Justin Rabin (24-over, T-83rd), Logan Peterson (33-over, 98th) and Cameron Bruce (35-over, 101st) followed.
Both teams are back in action Oct. 4-6 in Athens, Alabama, playing in a tournament hosted by Tennessee Southern.
