The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team returned to the Wildcat Center on Saturday morning to take on Benedictine University at Mesa (AZ) in day two of the Johnson & Wales Tournament. Following a 0-2 day yesterday, the Wolf Pack entered Saturday's match against the winless Redhawks eyeing their first victory of the 2016 season.
Loyola managed to build leads throughout the morning but was unable to maintain its advantages, falling in straight sets 3-0 (17-25,25-25,28-25) to move to 0-3 on the year. After also losing two games yesterday, Benedictine improves to 1-2 overall following the win.
Allison Hartmann (SO/Slidell, La.) led the Wolf Pack attack with eight kills on 18 attempts (.333) to go along with a team-high four blocks. Maddie Huekels (SO/Dyer, In.) recorded her third-consecutive double-digit assist match, dishing out a team-high 10 helpers with four digs. Kaitlynn Watson (FR/South Lake Tahoe, Ca.) scooped eight digs and Tylar Beckham (SO/New Orleans, La.) chipped in five kills and one block in the loss.
Overall, Loyola collected 28 kills on 112 attacks with 19 errors for a 0.80 hitting percentage.
Sydney Nelson and Marissa Kyman both recorded nine kills for the Redhawks while Olivia Ortiz handed out a game-high 33 assists in the victory.
Benedictine led the first set from the opening serve and used a 10-2 run to build a 23-12 cushion late in the opening frame. The Wolf Pack managed to string together a 5-2 run to close out the set but the Redhawks ultimately took the opening set 25-17.
With the score knotted at 10-10 in set two, Benedictine orchestrated a 6-1 run to take control of the set at 16-11. The Redhawks rode that momentum to the very end of the set to claim the 25-15 victory to go up 2-0.
The Wolf Pack matched their largest lead of the morning in set three, taking the 11-8 advantage early in the frame. The Redhawks quickly answered back to tie the set at 12-12, before putting together a 7-1 run to take control of the set. An attack error by the Wolf Pack ended the set and gave Benedictine the 25-18 set victory and the sweep.
Loyola returns to the Wildcat Center this afternoon, August 20, to close out tournament play against Montana Western at 2:00 p.m.
