Loyola Track and Field contends in Pelican Relays

The Wolf Pack took part in Southern University’s Pelican Relays this weekend

BATON ROUGE, La. –  On Friday, Loyola made the trip to Southern University for its first in-state meet to take on programs from across the Gulf Coast. The Wolf Pack competed against NCAA Division I teams in Southern, Southeastern, and Nicholls State, as well as familiar NAIA rivals in Dillard and Xavier. 

 

The Wolf Pack will cross Lake Pontchartrain for its next meet to take on opponents at the Strawberry Relays in Hammond, Louisiana on Friday, Apr. 11 at the Southeastern Track Complex.

 

Top 5 Finish

  • In the 1,500-meter run, Jasmine Martinez took fourth. The graduate student ended the race with a personal-best time of 5:07.31, passing several NCAA Division I athletes.

  • Loyola's 4x400-meter relay team of Ayva Smith, Leila Santana, Madison Reado, and Olivia Leroux recorded the third-best time in program history in the event. The team posted a performance of 4:13.14 while also earning second place in the event.

  • Jace Luckoski claimed fourth place in the 1,500-meter run. The sophomore from Belle Chasse, Louisiana, completed the race with a 4:12.14 time.

  • Taking second place in the 4x800-meter relay, Bryce Darensbourg, Mason Mack, Carter Dural, and Joseph Medina set the fourth-best time in the Wolf Pack record book, ending with a time of 8:12.84.

  • In the 4x400-meter relay, Loyola A (Caleb Curry, Dallas Hughes, Darensbourg, Ollie Brumfield IV) and Loyola B (Jack Ourso, Mack, Medina, Dural) placed in third and fourth and posted times of 3:17.64 and 3:29.06, respectively. Loyola's A team set a program record, surpassing the previous all-time mark from the Belhaven Invitational.

  • Earning a fourth-place finish in the javelin throw, Elio Bejaran established the second-best mark in program history. After breaking a program record in last week's meet, the freshman set a distance of 55.50 meters on Friday.

 

Program Record

  • Curry set his first individual program record for the Wolf Pack on Saturday. Curry completed the 400-meter hurdles in sixth place with a program-best time of 54.14, exceeding Loyola's previous record by over two seconds.

  • Richard Magann set a program-best mark on Saturday, posting a 41.39-meter performance in the discus throw. Recording 12th place, the Lafayette, Louisiana, native also posted the first Loyola discus throw to exceed the 40-meter mark. Magann's record at Southern is the second-consecutive program-best performance after logging an all-time mark in the hammer throw at Southern Miss last week.

 

Record Book Movement

  • Jordyn Minor recorded the fourth-best time in program history in the 100-meter dash. The sophomore logged a time of 12.21 with 22nd place in the event. She also set the second-best distance in the Loyola record book with a 5.42-meter performance in the long jump, the best spot since 2017.

  • Posting a time of 16.08 in the 100-meter hurdles, Madison Ackerman earned the fourth-best spot in the Loyola record book. Ending the race in 13th place, Ackerman surpassed her previous-best mark set at Southern Miss last week.

  • Recording the best time by a Loyola runner since 2018, Brumfield completed the 200-meter dash in 19th place. Brumfield's 21.78 time is the second-best spot in program history.

  • In the hammer throw, Magann set a mark of 38.76 meters. The junior took 13th place, along with setting the second-best mark in program history. In the shot put, Magann, recorded the third-best performance in program history with a distance of 11.78 meters for a 14th-place finish.

  • Willem Lang placed eighth in the javelin throw by earning a distance of 50.68 meters. Lang's 50.68-meter mark is the fourth-best spot in the Loyola record book.
