Track and Field competes at Rice and Southern Miss

The Loyola track and field programs competed in two meets this weekend

HATTIESBURG, Miss. –  The Wolf Pack traveled to the Southern Miss Invitational this weekend, sending a smaller group to Houston, Texas to participate in the Victor Lopez Classic. Loyola set a total of four program records this weekend. Loyola competed against teams from several divisions of athletics, including NCAA Division I programs and NAIA opponents.

 

The Pack will be back in action next weekend with a trip to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for the Pelican Relays at A. W. Mumford Stadium, starting on Friday, Apr. 4.

 

Top 5 Finish

  • Finishing the 3,000-meter run in fourth, Jasmine Martinez recorded the third-best spot in the Wolf Pack record book and the best time by a Loyola runner since 2013. The graduate student earned a time of 11:07.13.

  • Kaitlyn Becnel finished third in the high jump in Hattiesburg. The Marrero, Louisiana, native set a mark of 1.53 meters in the event.

  • Loyola's relay team of Ollie Brumfield IV, Bryce Darensbourg, Joseph Medina, and Mason Mack established the second-best mark in the Wolf Pack record book. In the 4x400-meter relay, the Pack's A relay team set a time of 3:23.60 to finish fifth in the event.

  • Freshman Elio Bejaran posted a program record in the javelin throw at Southern Miss. Bejaran ended the event in fifth place and sent the javelin a distance of 55.68 meters, over six meters beyond the previous program best.

  • In the 10,000-meter run at the Victor Lopez Classic, Jacob Kennedy completed the race in fifth place with a 33:35.98 time. The sophomore established the fourth-best spot in program history in the 10,000-meter event with his time.

 

Program Record

  • After breaking Loyola's program record in the 110-meter hurdles in last week's meet, Brumfield set another program record, once again, this time in the 400-meter dash. Placing 10th in the event, the freshman set a program-best mark of 49.61 in the 400-meter race.

  • In the hammer throw, Richard Magann smashed a program record he had owned since 2023. The junior recorded a toss of 40.75 meters, over five meters better than his previous best mark. Magann concluded the event in 19th place.

  • Jace Luckoski broke a program record of 26 years on Friday at the Victor Lopez Classic. The sophomore ended the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a 10:01.07 time, placing 13th in the event and beating out McNeese and Rice runners. The Belle Chasse, Louisiana, native surpassed Loyola's previous best mark, set by Loyola Hall of Famer Sean Fitzwilliam in 1999.

 

Record Book Movement

  • Jordyn Minor set the fourth-best mark in Loyola's record book in the 100-meter dash. Minor placed 14th while recording a time of 12.22.

  • Madison Ackerman logged the fourth-best spot in program history in the 100-meter hurdles. Ending the race in 11th, the freshman set a time of 16.13 in the event to surpass her previous top-five record.

  • Ending the javelin in seventh place, Sofia DiVincenti posted a distance of 32.41 meters. The Metairie, Louisiana, native recorded the fifth-best spot in program history to earn the first top-five program mark in her collegiate career.

  • With a 20th-place finish, Dallas Hughes earned the fourth-best mark in program history with a time of 50.14. Saturday's performance is Hughes' first top-five record in outdoor track and field.

  • Mason Stringer set the fifth-best spot in program history with a 13.06-meter performance in the triple jump. With Saturday's finish, Stringer has four of the top five marks in the Loyola record book.

  • Magann and Peyton Joshua record the second and third-best spots in program history in the shot put. Ending the event in 23rd and 25th, Magann and Joshua finished with marks of 12.06 meters, and 11.60 meters, respectively.

  • Magann added another program accomplishment to the day, earning the third-best distance in program history in the discus throw. The Lafayette, Louisiana, native completed the event in 21st place, posting a 38.44-meter performance.

  • In the javelin throw, Willem Lang notched the second-best mark in the Wolf Pack record book. Lang posted a distance of 54.82 meters to receive eighth place in the event.
