Box Score MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's tennis team began a slate of three consecutive matches against ranked NAIA opponents on Thursday at the SSAC/Sun/AAC crossover challenge. Starting the week off right, the No. 9-ranked Pack improved to 2-0 on the season with a 4-0 win against the No. 24 SCAD Atlanta Bees.
Doubles competition was close on Thursday. Micaela Ponce and Adele Fereres earned a 6-3 court 3 win, but SCAD followed by winning 6-4 on court 2. This set up an important No. 1 doubles match with the team of Lucy Carpenter and Chloe Henderson against SCAD's Shalimar Talbi and Adrianna Kluska, who earned a national ranking of No. 2 after reaching the fall's ITA Cup final.
Loyola's duo prevailed 6-4, and the Wolf Pack captured the doubles point.
From then on, the Pack cruised in singles. Henderson led off singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court 2, followed by Avrora Volkova's 6-1, 6-3 win on court 5. Ponce's first singles win of the year, a 6-3, 6-3 result on court 3, sealed the 4-0 win for the Wolf Pack.
Fereres and Juliette Finch both were ahead in their singles matches, one set to none, when the match was clinched. Carpenter also took the first set from Talbi, who was ranked No. 2 in NAIA singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Loyola will be looking to improve to 3-0 when the team faces the Sun Conference's No. 14-ranked St. Thomas University on Friday. The teams last played in 2023, with St. Thomas winning 4-1 at City Park. Friday's matchup at the Mobile Tennis Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
