MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola Wolf Pack men's tennis team defeated the Blue Mountain Christian University Toppers 7-0 on Friday to claim its first win of the 2024 season. The Loyola women also won their match against Blue Mountain on Friday, giving Matt Llewellyn his 50th win as head coach of the Loyola men's and women's tennis programs.
The Pack (1-7, 1-2 SSAC) began the 2024 SSAC Roundup, a series of neutral-site nonconference contests, Friday in Mobile. The roundup continues on Saturday, as the team faces No. 7-ranked Middle Georgia State at 10 a.m.
Loyola started off well in doubles, as Remus Hebhang-Balan and Nick Stam were a perfect 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. BMCU got a win at the No. 1 position, but court 2 wasn't far behind, as Spencer Matz and Hippolyte de Preville wrapped up the doubles point with a 6-2 win.
It didn't take the Wolf Pack long to clinch the match in singles either, as nearly every match was decided in two sets. Stam got things started, earning his first singles win of 2024: 6-1, 6-3 on court 5. Samuel Motazed followed, winning 6-2, 6-0 on court 3. Then on court 4, it was de Preville with a 6-1, 6-3 victory to clinch the match.
Returning to the lineup earlier in the week after an injury in February, Francisco Javier Arce Vieyra got a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to improve to 3-2 on the season. He's tied for a team high in singles wins with Motazed and De Preville, who also have three wins each in 2024.
Matz posted a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles, and Hebhang-Balan closed out the match in three sets, winning 10-0 in a third-set super tiebreak.
