NEW ORLEANS – The No. 12 Loyola Wolf Pack women's tennis team secured a third consecutive win at home on Wednesday with a 6-1 result over the No. 19 Dillard Bleu Devils.
Loyola is now 3-3 overall this season, with a 2-0 record in Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) play. This was the second straight victory over a ranked team for the Pack, and this is now the third season in a row in which the team has put together win streak of at least three matches.
"I'm proud of the Pack for getting the job done," said sophomore Micaela Ponce, who is coming off of a second SSAC Player of the Week award. "Let's keep the wins going."
The Wolf Pack will try to keep the wins going in an upcoming weekend road trip. First, the team travels to Pineville, La. on Friday to battle Louisiana Christian. Then, Loyola will face its third NCAA Division-I opponent of the season on Saturday with a road matchup at Northwestern State.
For the fourth time in six matches, the Pack started off the match by winning the doubles point. Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez earned a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, and Adele Fereres and Chloe Henderson also got a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles competition, Loyola won on five of the six courts to claim the match win and improve to 2-0 in SSAC action.
"It's a great start to the conference season," said sophomore Avery Frierson. "I'm glad that we finished like we started to get a good win against a good team."
Frierson was second to finish in singles, a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position, after Fereres kicked off singles play with a straight-sets win for the third consecutive match. Dillard got a point back with a win at No. 4, but Henderson was able to clinch the team victory with a win on court 3.
After Loyola clinched the match, Ponce won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on court 2. Then, Carpenter's No. 1 singles match went to a third-set tiebreak, which she won 7-4.
Carpenter and Fereres have both had stellar starts to the season, with each player holding a 5-1 singles record. Ponce and Frierson both are 4-2 in singles, and the team of Fereres and Henderson is 4-1 in doubles.
