NEW ORLEANS – On a cool and windy Thursday at the City Park Tennis Center, the Loyola Wolf Pack women's tennis team earned its first win of the 2024 spring season, shutting out the Mobile Rams 7-0.
Loyola, now 1-3 on the season but 1-0 in Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) play, will play a road match against Bethel before returning to City Park in a week on March 7. The home match, scheduled for noon, will be a top-15 matchup against NAIA No. 10 William Woods.
The Wolf Pack won two doubles matches on courts 2 and 3 to take the doubles point. Then in singles, all six Loyola players won their matches in straight sets.
"We came out with a lot of energy on every court," said senior Lucy Carpenter. "It was good to get a dominant win and a strong start to conference."
Carpenter's singles match was the last one to finish in what was a strong showing for the Pack at home. She knocked off the No. 1 singles player for Mobile 7-6, 6-3, with a 7-0 win in the tiebreak.
The success for the Wolf Pack started in doubles, with Micaela Ponce and Ariana Salgueiro-Estela quickly winning 6-1. Chloe Henderson and Adele Fereres clinched the doubles point for the Pack, 6-2 on court 3.
Fereres only lost one game at No. 4 singles, giving the Pack a 2-0 lead in the match with her 6-1, 6-0 victory. Avery Frierson was next, with a 6-0, 6-4 win on court 5. Ponce then clinched the match for the Pack, prevailing 6-0, 6-4 as well. All other singles matches played out, with Henderson and Avrora Volkova both earning their first singles victories in New Orleans.
"It's like a family because everyone is supporting each other," Volkova said. "We're so proud of our team."
