NEW ORLEANS – The No. 23-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack men's tennis team opened the 2024 spring season at home on Wednesday against Nicholls. In a tough match at City Park, the NCAA D-I Colonels took the match 6-1.
Loyola's point came in singles play, where Herman Aure stepped in at No. 6 singles and won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.
Aure and Tiger Cheung also played well in doubles, with the duo going up 5-2 in their match before Nicholls clinched the doubles point on the other two courts, causing their match to remain unfinished.
"I thought the men competed well overall," said head coach Matt Llewellyn. "They got some rust off and came out with really good energy in doubles. I think we could have fought harder to stay on the court longer in some of the singles matches. But overall, with not a lot of match play, I thought it was a really good effort with our guys."
The next few weeks are light for the Wolf Pack, as the next match on the schedule is not until February 25. Loyola is scheduled to play Xavier, which was ranked No. 5 in the NAIA Preseason Poll.
