WESTWEGO – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday, taking two games from the Stillman College Tigers at Segnette Field. Loyola won the first game of the day 14-1 before a 12-2 win in the series finale, giving the Pack their third straight Southern States Athletic Conference series win.
It's also the sixth straight three-game series win for the team, as Saturday improved Loyola's record to 20-9 overall and 7-2 in SSAC play. Next up for the 15th-ranked Wolf Pack is a road trip to No. 8 Mobile next weekend for another conference matchup.
Game 1: #15 Loyola 14, Stillman 1
The Wolf Pack put momentum on their side early with five runs through the first two innings. Tucker Ganley singled with one out in the first and Cole Romero followed that up with an RBI triple to push across the first run of the ballgame, then he scored during the next at-bat on a passed ball, 2-0. The Pack got runners on the corners after Christopher Bohrer walked and Kason Cullins bunt for a single, and a fielder's choice off the bat of Jake Mills made it a 3-0 lead. Aaron Davis started the second inning with another bunt single, which was followed up with a single by Brandon Mooney to shallow center to put runners on the corners with no outs. Another fielder's choice, this time from Ganley, pushed the lead to 4-0, and a ground out by Romero gave Loyola a 5-0 lead.
During that time, Nathan Monceaux faced one over the minimum while collecting five strikeouts through the first three innings. The freshman allowed his first hit in the fourth inning, and he finished his complete-game performance with eight strikeouts while giving up one run off three hits.
Loyola kept extending its lead, too, adding four more runs in the third, one each in the fourth and sixth, and three in the fifth to pad to its lead.
Game 2: #15 Loyola 4, Stillman 2 (8)
The Wolf Pack, again, scored in the game's first inning, as Mooney started it off with a single and later scoring on a double steal play with Ganley on first base. The Tigers, though, took a 2-1 lead with one run each in the second and third inning.
The Wolf Pack regained the lead in the fifth, pushing across three runs to take a 4-2 advantage. Mooney doubled to lead off and Romero walked with one out to put two Wolf Pack runners on base. Then, Mooney came home to score when the Stillman catcher tried to throw out Romero attempting to steal second. When Romero retreated back to first base, Mooney scored to tie the game, 2-2. Kason Cullins doubled during the next at-bat to put two runners in scoring position, and when Mills sent a hard-hit shot to second base, Romero came home easily, followed by heads-up base running by Cullins, to push the lead to 4-2.
Stillman tried to get at least one run back in the top of the seventh, but a leadoff double turned into a perfectly executed relay play for Loyola, as Aaron Davis, Mills and Jonathan Hammer combined to throw out the runner trying to stretch it into a triple.
Joshua Orr earned his second win of the season with three innings of relief work. The sophomore struck out a pair of Stillman batters during his outing while allowing no runs and three hits.
Things unraveled for Stillman in the bottom of the eighth, with the Pack scoring eight runs to enforce the 10-run rule. Loyola used just three hits in the frame to score those runs too, as Stillman walked five Loyola batters and hit three more to help bring the score to 12-2.
