MOBILE, Ala. – The 14th-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack baseball team traveled to Mobile to take on the No. 8 Rams, starting with the first game of the series Friday afternoon. Mobile took the series opener, 14-11, and the Pack (20-10, 7-3 SSAC) and Rams (21-4, 7-0) will finish the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
Â
After Mobile scored single runs in the first and second inning, the Wolf Pack pushed their first run across in the top of the third. Landon Trosclair started the frame off with a walk, then Aaron Davis made it two runners on base when Mobile committed an infield error. Courtesy runner Garrett Beadle moved to third when Brandon Mooney lined out to center, and Beadle came home during the next at-bat after Tucker Ganley hit a bunt single to cut the Rams' lead to 2-1.Â
Â
Christopher Bohrer and Kason Cullins started the top of the fourth with a single and a double, and Anthony Fernandez brought those two runs home with another double to give Loyola a 3-2 lead. Mobile, however, answered that with three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to jump back ahead 9-3.Â
Â
The Wolf Pack got all of those runs back and more with an eight-run seventh. While Jake Mills started the inning with a single, the majority of the damage came with two outs. After Mills got to second on a wild pitch, Mooney brought him home with a single, 9-4, then when Ganely made it runners on the corners with a single. Following that, Cole Romero made it a 9-5 deficit with another single to score Mooney. Bohrer then walked to load the bases, and Cullins came through with another double to plate two more runs, 9-7. Again, Loyola got the bases loaded via a walk with Fernandez at the plate, then in his second at-bat of the inning, Mills tied the game with a single up the middle, and Trosclair hit an infield single to give Loyola the 10-9 lead. Loyola wasn't done either, as pinch-hitter Ryan Smilari came through with an RBI single, 11-9.Â
Â
The Rams, though, evened the game with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning, then they took the 14-11 lead with three more runs in the eighth.Â
