WESTWEGO – In a game originally scheduled for 5 p.m. that started two hours later due to weather in the New Orleans area, the Stillman College Tigers won the series opener over the Loyola Wolf Pack, 12-8, at Segnette Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. to close out the series.Â
Â
The Pack (18-9, 5-2 in SSAC) pushed across their first two runs in the opening frame, as Brandon Mooney started the game with a bunt single to third base then moved to third on a passed ball and stolen base. He scored during the next at-bat when Tucker Ganley hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and Cole Romero kept things going with a single to right as well. With runners on the corners later in the inning, Christopher Bohrer and Romero executed a double steal to make it 2-0.Â
Â
The Tigers got a run back in the third inning before Loyola made it a 3-1 lead in the bottom half. Again, Mooney started things with a single before stealing second to get into scoring position. Romero flew out to move him to third base, then a Bohrer single plated the run. Stillman, however, used four hits and two Wolf Pack errors in the top of the fifth to jump ahead 5-3.Â
Â
After Mooney scored his third run of the game to answer Stillman's fifth, 5-4, the Tigers extended their lead to 7-4 with a pair of runs in the sixth. Loyola chipped into the lead and even jumped back ahead with two runs each in the seventh and eighth. Kason Cullins picked up a two-RBI single in the seventh, scoring Ganley and Mooney to make it a 7-6 deficit, then Romero tied the game in the eighth with an RBI single and the Wolf Pack took the lead one batter later when Ganley came home on a wild pitch, 8-7.Â
Â
The Tigers, though, scored five runs in the top of the ninth to seal the win.Â
