No. 15 Wolf Pack earns first conference sweep

Saturday marked the fourth series sweep of the season for the Loyola baseball team

WESTWEGO – Landon Trosclair collected three home runs throughout the day and the 15th-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack earned two more wins over the Brewton-Parker Barons on Saturday, completing the conference sweep with wins of 13-6 and 5-4. Loyola (18-8, 4-2 in SSAC) pushed ahead late in the first game of the doubleheader, then it got some late-inning magic from Trosclair and Brandon Mooney to walk-off the Barons in the nightcap.

The Pack will be back at Segnette Field for another Southern States Athletic Conference series next Friday and Saturday, hosting Stillman College.

Game 1: #15 Loyola 13, Brewton-Parker 6

After BPC went up 2-0 in the first, the Wolf Pack scored their first four runs in the next two innings in mostly unconventional ways. Brandon Mooney singled to lead off the bottom of the first, then he moved to second after Tucker Ganley executed a sacrifice bunt. When Cole Romero lined out to second, Mooney came around to score when the BPC second baseman attempted to get Mooney at second but instead threw the ball away. With the bases loaded for Aaron Davis in the second, Loyola tied the game on an awkward ground out to the pitcher, then they took the 3-2 lead on a balk by the Barons' pitcher. In a more conventional way, Mooney singled up the middle later in the frame to score Kason Cullins and make it a 4-2 Loyola lead.

In the fourth with the scored tied 4-all, Ganley beat out a slow chopper to the shortstop to score Davis, and an error by the BPC shortstop on the same play allowed Mooney to score from second, 6-4.

The Barons got one run back in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but Landon Trosclair made sure to put the game away with two more home runs. He hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make it an 8-5 lead, then a three-run bomb in the five-run sixth put the game away, 13-6. The catcher also threw out 4-of-5 base runners trying to steal as well.

Game 2: #15 Loyola 5, Brewton-Parker 4

The Pack struck first quickly in the second game of the doubleheader, as Mooney and Kason Cullins started the opening frame with back-to-back singles, which put runners on the corners. Romero hit an infield single during the next at-bat, giving Loyola an early 1-0 lead, but that was all it could get in the first.

After Brewton-Parker tied the game in the second and failed to push across any runs with one out and the bases loaded in the third, Cullins launched a solo home run in the bottom of the third to give the Pack a 2-1 lead. The Pack made it a 3-1 lead in the fifth, loading the bases off two BPC errors and a walked, as Luke Clement scored on a wild pitch. The Barons, however, plated two in the sixth, 3-3, and the Wolf Pack escaped another bases-loaded jam in the seventh to keep it tied.

BPC took a 4-3 lead in the eighth, but Trosclair, who came into the game late to play catcher, smacked his third homer of the day in the next half inning to tie it once again, 4-4. Jake Mills pitched a near-flawless top of the ninth, then Mooney led off the bottom half with a triple to left-center field. The Barons opted to intentionally walk the next two Wolf Pack batters to create a force at home with no outs, but Fernandez walked in the game-winning run to complete the sweep.

Pack Facts

  • For the series, Trosclair was 4-for-7 at the plate with four hits, all of them home runs, with 10 total RBI.

  • Trosclair also caught four runners stealing in Game 2. He only had three in that statistic before the series.

  • Now with 20 runners caught stealing in his career, Trosclair is sixth on that all-time list in the Wolf Pack record book (since 2005).
