WESTWEGO – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team didn't let a little rain slow it down in its series opener against Brewton-Parker College on Friday, run-ruling BPC, 15-1, in seven innings. The Wolf Pack and Barons had two games scheduled for Friday at Segnette Field, but afternoon rain forced the two teams to just play one. A doubleheader is now scheduled for Saturday, starting at 12 p.m.
Stephen Still rolled through the first three innings, recording five of his eight strikeouts through the first nine outs. It took the Loyola offense until the bottom of the third to record its first hit, but the Wolf Pack exploded for five hits to score six runs and take a 6-0 lead.Â
With one out,
Landon Trosclair and
Aaron Davis each walked, then
Brandon Mooney reached on an infield error to quickly load the bases for
Kason Cullins, who singled to plate the first two runs of the inning.
Cole Romero followed that up with a double off the left-center field wall, 3-0, and an infield single by
Anthony Fernandez loaded the bases again during the next at-bat.
Christopher Bohrer added a two-RBI single and
Jake Mills brought the sixth run home to give the Wolf Pack all of the early momentum, 6-0.Â
Loyola kept things going with seven more runs in the fourth inning. Davis led things off with a single, and he made it all the way to third base during the next at-bat on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Mooney walked then Cullins brought home the first run, 7-0, which was followed up by a walk for Romero to juice the bases with no outs. A single by Fernandez made it an 8-0 lead while keeping the bases loaded, and it was the same story for
Luke Clement, who walked to push the score to 9-0. The highlight of the frame, though, was
Landon Trosclair's grand slam with one out to extend the advantage to 13-0.Â
After the Barons got one back in the fifth, the Pack scored two more in the sixth for good measure. Bohrer belted his third home run of the season, and
Luke Clement came around to score after doubling off the left-field wall.Â
Still allowed five hits in his six innings of work, improving his record to 4-0 on the season.
Nathan Monceaux worked the final inning with no hits allowed.Â
