WESTWEGO – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team opened a three-game set with LSU Alexandria on Friday, as the 23rd-ranked Wolf Pack took the opener 3-1 over the Generals at Segnette Field. The two teams will meet up back at Segnette Field for two more games on Saturday, as the first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Â
After five scoreless innings that saw four Wolf Pack hits, two runners left on base and two runners caught stealing, Loyola finally broke through with two runs in the sixth inning. Brandon Mooney hit a hot-shot to first and reached base with one out, then he became the first player from either team to successfully steal a bag to get into scoring position. After Luke Clement walked, Ross Selvaggi beat out a slow roller to second to load the bases with two outs. LSUA made a pitching change, and the new Generals pitcher proceeded to hit the next two Wolf Pack batters to make it a 2-0 lead for the hosts.Â
Â
LSU Alexandria got a run back in the next inning, but the Wolf Pack got that back, too, in the bottom of the seventh. Landon Trosclair reached on a leadoff walk, and courtesy runner Ryan Smilari moved over to second on an Aaron Davis sacrifice bunt. Smilari would score during the next at-bat after two passed balls to make it a 3-1 lead.Â
Â
Stephen Still was tremendous in his second outing of the season, throwing six innings of no-hit ball with eight strikeouts. He faced just two over the minimum as well, pitching four 1-2-3 innings. Reliever Grant Goodbee earned the save after pitching the final 2.2 innings with three strikeouts. Goodbee, though, flirted with danger in the eighth and ninth innings, as the Generals put the tying runs in scoring position in both frames. However, the right-hander got an infield popup and a groundout to get out of the jam in the eighth, then back-to-back strikeouts ended any hopes for LSUA in the ninth.Â
