WESTWEGO – The No. 23 Loyola Wolf Pack baseball team improved their record to 4-2 with two wins on Saturday, defeating LSU Alexandria twice 6-2 and 8-4 to complete the three-game series sweep. Loyola will play two more games at home before a long road trip, hosting a doubleheader against Dillard on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m.
Â
Game 1: #23 Loyola 6, LSU Alexandria 2
Â
The two teams traded a couple of runs for the first four innings, as the score was tied 2-2. Loyola struck first when Brandon Mooney walked to lead off the first then reached second on a single by Tucker Ganley. After a double play put Mooney on third, he scored during the next at-bat off a wild pitch. The Generals tied it in the top third, but Aaron Davis got something going in the next half-inning when he led off that frame with a walk then stole second with one out. Back-to-back singles would give Loyola a 2-1 lead.Â
Â
The Wolf Pack broke things open in the fifth with a four-spot to take a 6-2 advantage. Again, Mooney walked to start things off, and he advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. A double by Ganely made it a 3-2, then Romero hit the first home run of the season by a Wolf Pack batter to extend it to 5-2. Luke Clement later came around to score to pad the lead even more.Â
Â
Brady Bowen earned the win after pitching the first five innings with seven strikeouts. The sophomore gave up the two earned runs off three hits, saving his best inning for last with a productive 1-2-3 frame and two strikeouts. After Reid Perkins did his job in the sixth with a strikeout, Andrew Riedell threw the seventh and struck out two more to finish things off.Â
Â
Game 2: #23 Loyola 8, LSU Alexandria 4
Â
Loyola scored in four straight innings in the middle of the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, extending its lead to as large as 8-1 by the seventh inning. Christopher Bohrer walked with one out in the fourth inning that set up a two-run homer by Ross Selvaggi, 2-0, then Mooney led off the fifth with a single and got to third via a wild pitch and a balk by the LSUA pitcher. He later scored off a double from Romero, who also scored two batters later when Bohrer singled to right field, 4-1.Â
Â
Another big blow by the Wolf Pack offense came in the sixth, as Jake Mills and Landon Trosclair got on base with no outs with a single and a walk, respectively, and Aaron Davis moved the two runners into scoring position with a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Mooney plated the first run, then a single by Ganely brought the second run home, 6-1, one batter later. The highlight of the inning, though, was Romero's triple to right-center that scored Ganely and made it a 7-1 lead for the Pack. Mills delivered the final run of the night for Loyola with an RBI single scoring Bohrer in the seventh, then the Generals added three more runs in the latter innings to bring the game to its final, 8-4.Â
Â
Starting pitching continued to shine for the Wolf Pack, as Matthew Weil earned the win with five lights-out innings. He recorded eight strikeouts and gave up just one earned run off two hits throughout his outing. Thomas Hakimian struck out four while giving up two earned runs during his three innings of work, and Jackson Sloan pitched the ninth with a strikeout while giving up one earned run.Â
