ALEXANDRIA, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans women's tennis team began a slate of three matches at the LSU Alexandria Invitational on Friday, defeating NAIA schools Texas Wesleyan University and Lewis-Clark State College to begin the tournament on a strong note.
The Wolf Pack won 4-0 over TWU and 4-1 over LCSC. The No. 14-ranked team in the NAIA, Loyola's record now stands at 5-3 on the season.
Loyola claimed the doubles point in both matches, with five different doubles combinations earning victories: Elly Carpenter and Lucy Carpenter, Reilly Briggs and Avery Frierson, Micaela Ponce and Ariana Salgueiro-Estela, Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez, and Elly Carpenter and Isabella Leaño.
That's six doubles points in eight matches this year for the Pack, with the only two losses coming against NCAA Division I teams.
Both matches were played to clinch, with the Wolf Pack needing just three singles wins to get a result in each match. Lucy Carpenter and Ponce earned two singles wins apiece between the two matches, with Ponce clinching the team victory for the Pack against Lewis-Clark. In that match, Adele Fereres had the other singles point for Loyola, only dropping one game in her win on Court 4. In the Texas Wesleyan match, the third singles point also came from Court 4, this time courtesy of Avery Frierson.
Individually, Lucy Carpenter and Ponce each now have winning records in singles at 4-3 this season. Fereres leads the team with a 5-2 record in singles, while Frierson also moved to a winning record at 2-1 on the year.
On Saturday, the Pack will close out the LSUA Invitational looking for another win in an early battle with Texas A&M-Texarkana. The match is scheduled for 7:30.
