MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern States Athletic Conference announced its men's basketball postseason awards Wednesday evening, and a total of 11 Wolf Pack student-athletes received recognition for their success on the court and in the classroom.
In his first season with the program, head coach Donald Reyes was named the SSAC Coach of the Year after leading the Wolf Pack to their second straight regular-season title. Harden was a welcomed addition to the team this season, becoming one of Loyola's primary ball-handlers while hitting multiple clutch shots in crunch time, earning the Newcomer of the Year award from the SSAC. Harden is joined by teammate Jalen Galloway on the All-Conference First Team, while Alex Hammond and Leonard Jackson were both placed on the All-Freshman team. Along with Galloway, Dominic Brown, Luke Ladner, Milan Mejia, Andrew Stagni, Troy Thomas and Josh Tolbert earned All-Academic honors, and Ladner was Loyola's representative on the SSAC Champions of Character Team.
Harden started 25 of Loyola's 27 games this season and averaged 13 points, 3.8 assists and 1.9 steals this season. His 52 total steals this season is two away from cracking Loyola's Top 10 for most steals in a season, and he's 20 assists away from getting into that Top 10 as well. He also tied a school record earlier this season with 19 free throws made in a game, draining those from the charity stripe against Stillman College in January.
Galloway leads the team in both points and rebounds per game, averaging 18 points while pulling down 7.8 rebounds. The Meridian, Idaho, native has been named the league's Player of the Week three times this season, too, and he is close to breaking into the Top 10 in Loyola history for both season points (469) and rebounds (203).
As a true freshman, Hammond averaged 6.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game this season. The New Orleans native started 16 of the 25 games he made an appearance in as well. Jackson, who's in his second year with the program, averaged 7.2 points and 2.3 rebounds in 23 games played this season. He started eight of those games after taking a redshirt last season.
As the No. 1 seed in this week's SSAC Championship, Loyola will play eighth-seeded Middle Georgia State on Thursday at 2:15 p.m. in its first action of the tournament.
