NEW ORLEANS – The 14th-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack didn't need to sweat as much in Tuesday's rematch compared to the first matchup with LSU Alexandria. After suffering a last-second loss in the two teams' season-openers on Oct. 22, Loyola left little doubt in The Den on Tuesday, defeating the Generals, 96-69.Â
Â
It's the Pack's fourth straight win, and they're now 4-1 overall heading into an exhibition contest with LSU New Orleans on Saturday. Tip-off at Lakefront Arena is set for 1 p.m.
Â
Both teams struggled to score in the early going, as Loyola had a 7-4 lead by the time the first media timeout was called at 14:50. LSUA was 1-for-10 during that stretch, and that eventually moved to 1-for-13 during a four-minute scoring drought. Kameron Johnson highlighted the scoring with a 3-pointer and two free throws.Â
Â
LSUA responded by cutting the score to one, 9-8, a minute later, then Loyola scored six quick points in a minute to prompt a Generals timeout. Michael Mouton scored twice, and Johnson added two more to make it a 15-8 lead near the 10-minute mark of the first half. Mouton continued to score for the Wolf Pack, making 4-of-5 shots to bring his total to nine by the five-minute mark. His contributions allowed the Wolf Pack to take a 28-14 lead at the third media timeout.Â
Â
Loyola's leading scorer, Kosta Bjelicic, scored his first field goal with four minutes left in the half, and he added two more buckets over the next couple of minutes, 35-19. Johnson finished with a team-high 14 points to help give the Wolf Pack a 40-23 advantage at the break.Â
Â
Loyola flirted with taking a 20-point lead throughout the first six and a half minutes, but eventually did, 55-35, when Mouton hit a 3 to become the third Wolf Pack player in double figures. Bjelicic led all scorers during that early stretch with seven points, as the Wolf Pack made 6-of-10 shots while LSUA was 3-for-10.Â
Â
A score by Jaylen Peters with 9:39 left in the game pushed Loyola's advantage to 30, 67-37, as Zachary Lee was Loyola's fourth in double figures. The largest lead of the night, 82-49, came at the 5:10 mark. Evan Savoy, Cayden Branch and Langston Adams Jr. all checked into the game late and scored to give Loyola nine players with points.Â
