Baseball sweeps Saturday doubleheader with No. 8 St. Thomas

The 23rd-ranked Wolf Pack traveled to South Florida for a three-game series with No. 8 St. Thomas this weekend

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team took down No. 8 St. Thomas (Fla.) twice on Saturday, winning 4-2 and 7-4 to take the series with the Bobcats. The Wolf Pack (9-5) and Bobcats will play a series finale on Sunday at 12 p.m. CST.

Game 1: #23 Loyola 4, #8 St. Thomas 2

The Wolf Pack got another good start from Stephen Still and Anthony Fernandez had another big day, as Loyola took down St. Thomas in the first game of the doubleheader. Still threw six strong innings and Fernandez hit his fourth home run in his fourth collegiate game to help the Pack prevail.

The scoring got started for both teams in the third inning with one run for each team. Loyola first took the 1-0 lead off a single by Luke Clement, as Kason Cullins walked and stole second to get into scoring position. With the game tied, 1-1, Fernandez had his first of two big hits with a double down the left-field line to start things with no outs. A single by Jake Mills put runners on the corners, then an infield error off the bat of Landon Trosclair brought home Fernandez to make it a 2-1 lead.

Fernandez struck again with a homer to center field in the sixth, making it a 3-1 lead, while Still held the Bobcats down for the rest of his outing. The junior faced the minimum in four of the seven frames he saw on the mound with three strikeouts.

With the bases loaded in the ninth, Aaron Davis scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-1 lead and St. Thomas added another in the bottom half to bring the game to its final, 4-2.

Game 2: #23 Loyola 7, #8 St. Thomas 4

Brandon Mooney stepped to the plate with an opportunity to give Loyola the lead late in the second game of the doubleheader, and he delivered. With the bases loaded and no outs, Mooney slipped one in front of the center fielder to score Mills and give the Pack the 5-4 advantage. A groundout by Tucker Ganley plated Trosclair and Mooney came home on a passed ball to put Loyola up 7-4.

Jackson Sloan entered to pitch the final two innings, getting out of a jam he inherited in the eighth and getting a game-ending double play to face the minimum in the ninth. It was the first save of the season for the graduate transfer as well.

After St. Thomas took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Wolf Pack pushed two runs across in the second to tie the game. Mooney got that rally started with a no-out double, and he later scored on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly off the bat of Clement. Fernandez came through again with an RBI single during the next at-bat.

Mooney, again, started things with a double, this time with two outs in the fourth. After a single by Tucker Ganley put runners on the corners, Mooney scored on a double steal to give the Pack the 3-2 lead. Then, Cullins made it all the way around after getting hit by a pitch with two outs. The junior stole second and later scored on a single by Mills to push the score to 4-2. The Bobcats would later tie it with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth, setting up the three-run eighth for Loyola.
