Baseball splits two games at Cajun Collision Sunday

The 23rd-ranked Wolf Pack won one and lost one during the final day of the Cajun Collision showcase on Sunday

STERLINGTON, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team rebounded from a tough go of it at the Cajun Collision with a win in its tournament finale. In all, Loyola went 1-1 on Sunday with a 7-6 loss to Campbellsville (Ky.) and an 8-5 win over Texas A&M Texarkana in two seven-inning games.

No. 23 Loyola (7-5) will continue its road trip with a three-game series at No. 8 St. Thomas (Fla.) next weekend.

Game 1: Campbellsville 7, #23 Loyola 6

The Wolf Pack lost a heartbreaker to Campbellsville to start the day, as the Tigers got a walk-off three-run home run in the final inning.

In what would become a theme for the day, Anthony Fernandez belted his first career home run in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1 after Campbellsville struck first in the opening frame. Loyola would then take a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning after Tyler Hopkins walked with the bases loaded and Jake Mills reached on a fielder's choice.

The two teams would go back and forth in the next couple of half-innings, as the Tigers scored three in the bottom of the fourth to jump ahead 4-3 before the Pack plated three in the top of the fifth to switch the lead in their favor, 6-4. Christopher Bohrer got all three RBI in the fifth, too, off a three-run home run. Loyola held Campbellsville scoreless during its next two at-bats, but the Tigers would walk it off with the three-run home run in the seventh.

Game 2: #23 Loyola 8, Texas A&M Texarkana 5

The second game of the day started fast for both teams, each pushing two runs across in the first inning. After the Eagles made it 2-0 in the top of the first, Bohrer, again, came up big with a double to score Brandon Mooney, then Ross Selvaggi brought in the second run with a bases-loaded walk. From there, Loyola's starter Nathon Monceaux had three straight perfect innings to keep the Texas A&M Texarkana offense at bay.

In the meantime, Loyola scored six more runs to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Cole Romero made it a 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the second, and Mooney scored moments later on a balk, 4-2. Fernandez smacked his second home run of the day in the third inning to make the lead 5-2, then the freshman hit another one, this time a three-run bomb, in the fourth inning to push the advantage to 8-2.

The Eagles were able to push across three more runs on Monceaux, who earned the win, but Mitchell Cope pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn the save.
