Baseball drops matchup with Baker Saturday

The No. 23 Loyola Wolf Pack took another loss at the Cajun Collision on Saturday

STERLINGTON, La. – The 23rd-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack baseball team continued the Cajun Collision showcase on Saturday, falling to Baker (Kan.), 8-2, in their second of four games in Sterlington, Louisiana. The Pack (6-4) will play two more games on Sunday, first matching up with Campbellsville (Ky.) at 11 a.m. before a 2:30 contest against Texas A&M-Texarkana. 

Baker jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, pushing its advantage to 4-0 before Loyola could score in the third. Brandon Mooney walked with one out to put a man on, then Cole Romero jacked a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 4-2. Baker, however, answered that with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take its 8-2 lead. 

Thomas Hakimian shined in his relief performance, finishing the last 2.2 innings with five strikeouts while giving up just one hit. 

Pack Facts

  • Cole Romero kept his season-long hitting streak alive on his second home run of the season in the third inning. Adding this year's 10 games to his 11-game hitting streak to end last season, Romero has at least one hit in 21-straight games.

  • Romero also has four games this season with multiple hits. Through the season's first 10 games, he's the team's leader in home runs (2), triples (1), doubles (4), and slugging percentage (.684).

  • Luke Clement and Brandon Mooney both reached on walks during the game, extending their season-long on-base streaks to 10 games. 

  • With his five strikeouts in fewer than three complete innings, Thomas Hakimian became the fourth Wolf Pack pitcher to record double-digit strikeouts this season. Through three pitching appearances, 8.2 innings, Hakimian has 11 strikeouts.
