NEW ORLEANS – With the college tennis season officially underway, the Loyola men's and women's tennis teams returned to New Orleans to take on NCAA Division I school Nicholls State University for the season's first home match at City Park.Â
Â
Nicholls won the women's match 5-2 and the men's match 6-1.Â
Â
The Loyola women came away with two singles victories and were close to taking the doubles point, as the Wolf Pack began the match with a dominant Court 2 victory, 6-0 from Micaela Ponce and Ariana Salgueiro-Estela. The result of women's doubles came down to the match on Court 1, where Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez were down 6-5 but came back to force a tiebreak. The decider was then tied at 5-5 but Nicholls secured the last two points to clinch the doubles point.Â
Â
Carpenter rallied back to win her singles match in three sets: 6-3, 3-6, 11-9. Carpenter has now played against Nicholls' top singles player, Simona Maksimovic, four times in her career, with their all-time series tied at 2-2.Â
Â
The other women's singles win for the Pack came on Court 5, as Adele Fereres continued her hot start to the season with a come-from-behind, three set victory: 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.Â
Â
Loyola's men's team got one singles win from Aubin Duchier, as the senior secured a point in straight sets: 6-3, 6-4. Francisco Javier Arce Vieyra was also able to take the opening set in his match on Court 1, but he eventually fell in a third-set super tiebreak.Â
Â
The Wolf Pack women's team will return to action on Friday, Feb. 3, for a noon match against Dillard. It'll be the team's first NAIA dual match of the season.Â
Â
For the Wolf Pack men, they continue a stretch of matches against NCAA teams from the Southland conference, as they face the University of New Orleans next Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m.
