SEU won the men's match 5-1 and the women's match 4-1
NEW ORLEANS – After two matches away from home, the Loyola Wolf Pack men's and women's tennis teams returned to New Orleans on Wednesday to take on Southeastern University in a matchup at Xavier University's Tennis Center.
The women's match featured two similarly ranked teams, as the Wolf Pack came in at No. 13 while Southeastern was No. 16. The Fire took the women's match 4-1, while also winning the men's match 5-1.
"Southeastern played well today, credit to them," said head coach Matthew Llewellyn. "Our men beat themselves, which was disappointing. We made great strides as a team last week, but this week has been quite a regression. I expect this at times from a young team, but today was rough."
The lone singles win came from Remus Hebhang-Balan, playing at the No. 4 spot. It took three sets, but he bested Southeastern's Enrique Martinez. Francisco Arce Vieyra also won a set in his match at No. 3 singles, but it did not finish.
"Our women got beat straight up," Llewellyn said in contrast to the men's match. "We had chances in the doubles and a few matches I feel could've gone either way which would've changed the outcome. Credit again to Southeastern. They came here to beat us because of our ranking and they did."
Lucy Carpenter continued her hot streak playing at the top spot for the Wolf Pack. Carpenter defeated No. 27-ranked Beatrice Letizia in straight sets at No. 1 singles. It was her 10th singles victory of the season, and she's undefeated in her last seven matches. In doubles, Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez rolled to a 6-2 victory. It's the duo's 11th win at No. 1 doubles this season, and they still have not lost to any NAIA opponents in the spring.
Another matchup with an NCAA Division-I opponent is next on the schedule, with Loyola's men's and women's tennis teams hitting the road to face Jackson State on Friday. The match is scheduled for noon in Jackson, Miss.
