The Knights won 4-0 in both men's and women's matches
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern States Athletic Conference concluded its Montgomery Round-up on Friday, with the Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams taking on the Middle Georgia State Knights.
Ranked 11th in men's tennis and 12th in women's, the Knights took both matches 4-0. The teams played to clinch, so several matches in singles and doubles did not finish. Loyola's women's team is now 7-8 on the season and 2-2 in SSAC play, while the men's team fell to 5-7 overall, 1-3 in conference.
"We played tough today and really fought against one of the top programs in NAIA," head coach Matthew Llewellyn said. "The scores do not indicate the competitive effort of our teams. That's the unfortunate part of playing matches to clinch. That said, we needed to play clinch matches for that experience."
Lucy Carpenter and Francisco Arce Vieyra were each up a set in their singles matches before Middle Georgia clinched the team win. Fatima Vasquez was also in a deciding third set after winning the second. Carpenter and Vasquez were ahead in their match at No. 1 doubles, as was the duo of Aubin Duchier and Remus Hebhang-Balan, before the matches were stopped.
"Lucy solidified her case as the top player in the SSAC this week," said Llewellyn. "She was not able to complete her singles but was up a set and in control. Really proud of her efforts on and off the court this season."
Despite the loss, Llewellyn said "overall, we learned a lot and grew so much as a team which I was proud to see. If we can continue this type of energy and play for each other, great things will come."
Both Loyola teams will face another tough test in their next match, this time against the Southeastern Fire. Southeastern is ranked 17th on the men's side and 16th on the women's. The matches are scheduled for noon on April 6 at Xavier University's Tennis Center.
