MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team saw their five-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday, dropping a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup with the Rams, 60-53, in Mobile. The loss moves the Wolf Pack to 14-5 overall and 8-3 in the league, which is still good for first place in the SSAC standings.
Mobile got off to a good start with a 15-9 lead after the first 10-minute quarter. Down 4-0, Tay Cannon scored first for Loyola then Sandra Cannady made it a 6-4 Rams lead a couple of minutes later. Mobile pushed ahead 13-4, but an and-1 opportunity and a score by Taylor Thomas in the final 30 seconds of the frame helped keep the Wolf Pack close.
Kennedy Hansberry started the second quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers in a 60-second span to quickly tie the game at 15. After Mobile went back ahead, Cannady and Liz Critton had consecutive scores to keep Loyola within a point of the Rams' lead, then Thomas gave Loyola its first lead, 22-20, with a 3 at the three-and-a-half-minute mark. Cannady and Thomas each scored in the final minutes, but Mobile ended the half with an 8-4 run to grab the advantage at the break, 28-26.
Both teams struggled to find points in the third quarter, but the Rams outscored the Pack 11-6 to take a seven-point lead into the fourth. Scores by Cannady and Hansberry helped keep Loyola within one possession in the first half of the third, but Mobile held the Pack to just one point the rest of the way.
Back-to-back buckets by Cannon to start the fourth brought Loyola to within four, 39-35, and scores by Hansberry, Cannady and Jazmene McMillan midway through the quarter kept the deficit at five. Leading 53-46, Mobile quickly extended the lead to seven with a minute left in the game. Thomas and Cannon made it interesting, though, each scoring in the final 60 seconds to cut the score to three, 56-53. The Rams, however, made four free throws down the stretch to finish off the win.
